Tory MP Continues to Fight First Nation Efforts

posted July 9, 2007

It shouldn’t be a surprise that Tory MP John Cummins (Delta-Richmond East) continues his personal crusade against Indian issues! He was one of the first to stand up against First Nations as a ‘Reformer’ and he continues the accusations that any effort for Aboriginal People is wrong and no good for the general public.

Cummins is shouting louder once again as the Tsawwassen people prepare for their treaty vote. He is saying that “federal Minister Jim Prentice and B.C. Aboriginal Relations Minister Mike de Jong are knowingly manipulating the Tsawwassen treaty ratification vote by throwing money at the band.” "They are unfit for office," Cummins told the Toronto Star last week.

The Tsimshian First Nations Chief Negotiator states, “that MP has consistently protested any First Nations rights. For example, he would deny access to the commercial fishery harvest – when he argues that, he argues against the acceptance of constitutionally protected aboriginal rights.” Wesley wonders if Cummins makes time to attend to other activities of his constituency or if he has ever once looked at any of the positive attributes that the development of a First Nation community or a treaty can bring to its whole area.
